  • Here's an interesting perspective from Counterpunch. It's called Lynching Barry Bonds, by Dave Zirin.

'Even if the 1990s will go down in history as a time when better hitting was achieved through chemistry, that doesn't excuse the current media attack. They are playing to people's worst instincts and ideas. They are also being historically dishonest as they wax rhapsodic about baseball's gauzy past. Anyone who thinks that Mickey Mantle had a big glass of milk before every at bat is kidding themselves. The 1980s was the era of cocaine. The 1960s was when "greenies" or amphetamines were passed around the clubhouse like M&Ms. The era before 1947 was a time when a significant part of the population was segregated out of the game.'

  • I'm actually a Giants fan. I was born and raised in the bay area, so lest you think I'm some blue-blooded dodger fan (blech!) just out to bash barry, let me assure that it is untrue. I just thought the juxtoposition of the two images speaks volumes.

I don't hate barry for what he's done (integrety of the game? bah! role model? feh. drug usage? hey man, your body is your own, and if you don't want nutz, who am i to stop you?) but, i am hardly a bonds apologist, either. (we still haven't won a championship since the giants or bonds came to SF! ;p)

I am under no illusions: bonds records are bull, but so are many of the others in baseball. history, as the counterpunch article nicely points out, is tainted anyway. baseball, inc. is as guilty as the players for the steroid "problem." turning a blind eye makes them culpable of fostering the culture that, appearently, permeates the game.

  • I haven't been a baseball fan since I was a kid and the Dodgers beat the Yankees in, umm, 1981 (I think). It's hard for me to care about the steroids thing too much... These are a bunch of really rich guys who take drugs to make even more money. (what's the minimum salary in MLB these days? It's gotta be over a million, right?)

Bleah. I really just thought it was an interesting article. Originally I was in the "he's a cheater" camp, but that piece gave me a little pause.
