DIB Band Profile: SOFT

I reviewed this band a while ago, and then they were nice enough to give a copy of their new song and they answered a few of my questions. I'm going to try to make this an on-going thing, here at DIB, and I plan on asking basically the same questions to everyone. This is partially because I'm likely a bad ``journalist,'' but also because I find it interesting to see the different responses to the same questions. The profile basically goes like this: I'll find a band I like or a band will contact me (as the band Soft did several months ago), and I'll listen to some of their shit. I'll find a song I really like, post it, and then ask the questions I've determined to be interesting. Then I play the waiting game.

Well, the game is over, and so here goes the first ever DIB band profile, on an excellent indie rock band from NYC, Soft. The song is

Soft - Higher

And here's my mini interview, with responses by Johnny Reineck (JR):

DIB: What are your names and what do you do in the band?
JR: Johnny Reineck- Vocals, Vincent Perini- Guitar, Sam Wheller- Guitar, Dino
Siampos- Bass, Chris Colley- Drums

DIB: How long have you been together and how did you all meet?
JR: We've been together for about 2 years now and we were all friends before we
started the band. We were hanging out for a long time before we ever got
the idea.

DIB: What is "Higher" about?
JR: Astral Projection.

DIB: Who does most of the song-writing?
JR: We all do it and way too much.

DIB: What are your major musical and lyrical influences?
JR: I'm really into (Smog) and the Jesus and Mary Chain for lyrics, George
Michael and Ian Brown for melodies, Primal Scream and Spiritualized for
feel, and Chemical Brothers and INXS for grooves.

DIB: What is your greatest moment as a band?
JR: Probably our first NYC show - at Irving Plaza!

DIB: Have you opened for any bands you idolize, yet?
JR: Not yet - still working on it!

DIB: What's your favorite part of being in a band?
JR: Playing our song Gold - never ceases to feel great.

Well, I hope you enjoyed this little interview (I sure did, so I'll keep doing them as long as bands keep showing interest) and I hope you enjoy the song. If you sign up for Soft's mailing list, you'll get access to even more MP3s, and finally, I hope that profiling an indie rock band won't tarnish my punk creds.
